The Great-Great Grandmother Who Stole Chickens

Writer: Heidi ClemonsHeidi Clemons

My 2x great grandmother was caught stealing chickens with her beau and fined $25. She wasn't married to the man and I'm not really sure how she met him. At one point she was listed at his residence on the census as a 'border.'

The story has remained a mystery among family members who have NEVER spoken of it, but I found it in the local newspaper. I can only imagine that she was stealing the chickens to eat them--I'm sure that she struggled financially. She had a difficult time as a young, single mom at 18 years old with an 'illegitimate' child in 1907. The word is repeated in most of the official documents including the birth certificate and census.

The chicken stealing came later, along with other interesting stories found in news articles. That's what happens when you are from a small town. Everyone knows everyone's business and you don't even need social media for word to get around.

Fast forward over 100 years and I'm fascinated by how this trans-generational financial trauma has impacted my family for 5 generations and what it means for my children. When I look back over decisions from previous generations, I can sometimes pinpoint why I may have also made similar choices--but never stole any chickens!

However, as I continue to work out the details and see this interwoven throughout my family, I have also decided to make changes to positively impact future and future generations!

It may be that your family has made similar decisions. It may be hard to break free from being pulled in the same direction. You can change and you are worth it to make the changes that you want.

Don't let stealing chickens be your legacy for future generations!
